Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Understanding Carbon Credits
What are carbon credits in the Kenyan context?
A carbon credit is a tradable unit representing the removal or avoidance of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) from the atmosphere. In Kenya, these are generated by verified projects—such as reforestation, agroforestry, or clean energy—that help the country meet its climate goals while supporting local communities.
How do carbon credits actually work?
When a project (like a forest conservation site) reduces emissions, it is independently audited against international standards. Once verified, it is issued "credits." Companies or organizations can then purchase these credits to compensate for their own unavoidable carbon footprint. Once a buyer uses a credit, it is "retired" in a registry so it cannot be sold or used again.
Are carbon credits a form of investment?
Carbon credits are environmental instruments, not traditional financial assets. While there is a market for them, they are primarily tools for climate mitigation. We provide research and intelligence, but we do not provide financial, investment, or brokerage advice. We always recommend consulting with legal and financial professionals before participating in carbon markets.
What is the difference between carbon credits and carbon offsets?
These terms are often used interchangeably, but "offsetting" is the action a company takes (buying credits) to compensate for their emissions, while "carbon credits" are the actual certificates themselves. Both represent a commitment to funding climate action that wouldn't have happened otherwise.
